UW-Oshkosh Opens WVC Play with 3-0 Sweep (1-30-17)
UW-Oshkosh, winners of the last eight regular season Wisconsin Volleyball Conference championships, started the 2017 campaign on a positive note with a 26-24, 25-21, 25-19 sweep over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Jan. 28) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans (1-0 / 1-0 WVC) started slow with seven service errors in the first set which allowed the Blugolds to remain close. "We need to have a better mind-set before we serve," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We don't need to get an ace to be successful. We need to be able to let our block and defense work to score us points as well."

Holding a two or more point lead for much of the first set, UW-Oshkosh had two straight hitting errors late in the stanza to allow UW-Eau Claire to knot the score at 24-24. A hitting error by the Blugolds and then a kill by Brandon Schmidt (Gr. - Kaukauna) ended the set.

"UW-Eau Claire did a good job challenging our block and played tough defense," added Schaefer. "They played well making us earn the victory tonight."

The Titans did a better job controlling the match after the tight first set by eliminating errors and making better reads defensively at the net and in the back court.

Schmidt led the Titans offensively with 10 kills and added two service aces. Tony D'Acquisto (So. - Franklin) had nine kills and two blocks and Tony Mack (Sr. - Muskego) added five kills and four digs. Travis Hudson (Sr. - Wauwatosa) piled up 31 assists, five kills and two service aces and Devin Hudson (So. - Wauwatosa) added five kills and two service aces.

The Titans finished with 40 kills and nine service aces.
