Titans Take 3rd at 2018 Las Vegas Open (3-20-18)
The UW-Oshkosh men’s volleyball team went 4-1 and reached the semifinals of the Las Vegas Open on Friday and Saturday (March 15-16) in Nevada. The Titans, ranked #15 in the latest National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Di vision I poll were the reigning champions.

On Friday, UW-Oshkosh started pool play with an easy victory over Cal Poly SLO “B” 25-14, 25-20. The Mustangs were ranked #3 in the NCVF Division III poll. Nick Davies (So. – Waukesha) dominated the net with eight kills on eight attempts and added five assists.

Matt Pedersen (Jr. – Muskego) piled up 13 assists and added three service aces. Older brother Sammy Pedersen (Sr. – Muskego) led the team with three service aces, Sam Moua (Sr. – Appleton) provided seven digs and John Collins (Jr. – New Berlin), Nate Leitermann (Sr. – Brookfield) and Brandon Schmidt (Gr. – Kaukauna) each had two blocks.

In the second match of the day UW-Oshkosh beat Utah State University, 25-21, 25-17 behind the eight kills, nine assists and three blocks by Davies. Matt Pedersen dished out 12 assists and added three service aces and Peter Nordel (Sr. – Torrance, Calif.) and Schmidt added five kills. Moua led the team with five digs against the Aggies.

In a showdown for first place in their initial poll, UW-Oshkosh survived against a strong California State University-Northridge team 25-22, 23-25, 15-11. For the third straight match Davis led the team in kills with 14 put aways and added three blocks.

Leading the Titans were Jake Martin (Jr. – New Lenox, Ill.) by scooped up 10 digs, Leitermann by blocking four shots and Matt Pedersen by directing 29 assists. Nordel had six kills and two blocks and Schmidt provided six kills.

On Saturday, UW-Oshkosh dominated Colorado State University 25-17, 25-15 in the quarterfinals. Sammy Pedersen tallied five service aces and five digs, Schmidt led the team with eight kills on 11 errorless attempts and Davies slammed down seven kills. Matt Pedersen had 13 assists and Basting claimed seven kills.

In the semifinals, UW-Oshkosh lost an entertaining match to #4 Cal Poly SLO, 29-27, 22-25, 15-11 to end the tournament. Davies topped the team with 16 kills on 21 attempts and Matt Pedersen ran the offense with 27 assists. Nordel had nine kills on 10 attempts and provided three blocks, Schmidt had six kills and Collins had five kills as the Titans had 46 in the match. Martin and Moua each had five digs.
