UW-Oshkosh Wins League Leading 12th Title (4-8-18)
The UW-Oshkosh men’s volleyball team made it a clean sweep of both the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference regular season conference title and the State Championship on Friday and Saturday (April 6-7) in Menomonee Falls. The Titans went 6-0 without dropping a set during the two-day event to win its league leading 12th WVC State title.

UW-Oshkosh (35-10) earned the number one seed for the single elimination playoffs by squeaking by UW-La Crosse, 25-23, 25-23, handling UW-Whitewater 25-20, 25-18, dominating Marquette University 25-20, 25-16 and beating UW-Eau Claire 25-21, 25-17.

Peter Nordel (Sr. – Torrance, Calif.) led the Titans against the Eagles by slamming down nine kills on 13 attempts. Matt Pedersen (Jr. – Muskego) dished out 25 assists and added two service aces. Nick Davies (So. – Waukesha) had seven kills and three blocks and Jake Martin (Jr. – New Lenox, Ill.) scooped up nine digs. Nate Leitermann (Sr. – Brookfield) provided four blocks and Sammy Pedersen (Sr. – Muskego) had three service aces and four digs.

In the win over the Warhawks, Nordel led the team with eight kills on 10 attempts. Davies added seven kills and two blocks and Matt Pedersen distributed 21 assists. Brandon Schmidt (Gr. – Kaukauna) had five kills on 11 attempts and Leitermann topped the team with four blocks, including one solo stuff.

Nordel provided the offense with ten kills on 11 attempts in the triumph over the Golden Eagles. Davies added eight kills and three blocks, Schmidt had five kills and Matt Pedersen piled up 24 helpers and had a tournament high five service aces. Martin tallied 10 digs and one service ace and Sam Moua (Sr. – Appleton) added eight digs and equaled Martin’s service ace total.

Davies led the Titans with nine kills and two solo blocks in the victory over the Blugolds. John Collins (Jr. – New Berlin) had seven kills on 11 attempts, Matt Pedersen totaled 20 assists and three service aces and Martin led the team with eight digs. Moua and Sammy Pedersen each had five saves.

With their performance in pool play the Titans advanced automatically to their 27th straight WVC State Championship semifinals and secured a dominating 25-11, 25-19 win over UW-Whitewater. Offensively Davies led the team with 10 kills and defensively Nordel topped the team with five blocks, including two solo stuffs. Matt Pedersen had 21 assists and Martin led the team with five digs.

In the championship match UW-Oshkosh prevailed over Marquette University in a 25-14, 25-21 sweep. The match marked the fourth straight year that the two rivals met in the finals with Titans owning a 3-1 mark in those contests.

Davies once again provided consistent offense with nine kills on 14 errorless attacks and also pitched in three blocks. Schmidt had six kills on seven attempts, Leitermann had six kills on eight attempts and added two blocks and Matt Pedersen had 21 assists.

Martin tallied 11 digs, Moua chipped in nine digs and Alex Basting (Jr. – Franklin) and five digs as the Titans had 30 total in the match.

Nordel was named the tournament most valuable player and Davies, Martin and Pedersen joined him on the seven-member team.

“To capture this prestigious championship and bring the title home to UW-Oshkosh means so much,” said head coach Will Brydon. “It’s an honor to compete in the WVC, the most competitive conference in the country in my opinion, and this championship shows the talent and determination of the team. We will keep this momentum rolling into the NCVF national championship next week.”
