Titans Slay Warhawks (2-11-09)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team swept a very talented UW-Whitewater squad, 25-22, 27-25, 25-20 in a Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match-up on Wednesday, (Feb. 11) in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh (9-1/3-0 WVC), ranked second in the nation according to the latest National Volleyball Coaches Federation poll squeaked out the first two sets before pulling away in the third to secure the victory. UW-Whitewater (3-2/3-2 WVC) started off strong taking a 12-9 lead before UW-Oshkosh responded with a 5-2 run to tie the score at 14-14. The score remained a one-point affair until the 22-22 mark when Bill Meidenbauer (Fr. - Waukesha) rattled off the last three points of the set on his serve, including one on a service ace to pull out the first stanza. The second set was a back and forth contest until UW-Oshkosh inched out to a 20-16 cushion before UW-Whitewater sided out. The Warhawks grabbed three points off of the lead to knot the score at 20-20. The two teams traded points until UW-Whitewater served for the set at 24-23. The Titans responded with a side out and two straight service points off of the serve of Danny Hessling (Sr. - Greenfield) to take a 2-0 in sets. After serving tough in the first two sets, the Warhawks serve when south in set three allowing the Titans to build leads of 17-11 and 20-14 before taking the-five point win and the match. Nate Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) led UW-Oshkosh with 12 kills, 25 assists and added four digs. Aaron Wayne (Sr. - New Berlin) gobbled up nine digs and Meidenbauer added nine kills and a match-high four service aces. Hessling smacked down eight kills on 10 attempts, John Erickson (Sr. - Ripon) and Aaron Lang (Jr. - Appleton) added seven kills and Dan Ruys (So. - Kimberly) six as the Titans tallied 52 in the match. "That is not the 26th-ranked team in the country," commented head coach Brian Schaefer. "They are very good and attacked us with big serves in the first two sets. We did a good job of weathering the storm until they cooled off in the third set. That team could be a top-ten team at nationals."
