UW-Oshkosh II Makes it Lucky Number Seven (2-15-09)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team won its seventh consecutive regular season Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Division II championship with a three-set win over rival Marquette University II on Saturday (Feb. 14) in Dunbar.

UW-Oshkosh II (16-1) wrapped up the number one seed in the single elimination championship by sweeping UW-Stout, 25-17, 25-17 and then Marquette University II, 25-14, 30-28. The Titans went 7-0 during the regular season without losing a set in the process.

Leading the way for the Titans over the Blue Devils was Jordan Mattingly (So. - Kaukauna) with eight kills and two service aces. Matt Maciejewski (Fr. - Waukesha) added four kills and Gus Odorizzi (So. - Pleasant Prairie) topped the team with four blocks. Chris Schinner (Sr. - Mequon) led the offense with 17 assists.

Mattingly again paced UW-Oshkosh II with eight kills on a flawless 10 attempts, while amassing five digs and two service aces against the Golden Eagles. Steve Meyer (Fr. - Mequon) tallied six kills and two service aces and Luke Coyle (Fr. - Wauwatosa) and Maciejewski each slammed down five kills. Schinner had 25 helpers in the contest.

Mike Callaway (Sr. - Waukesha) scooped up eight digs and Maciejewski had six, while Coyle led the team with three blocks.

In the semifinals of the tournament UW-Oshkosh II breezed past UW-Whitewater II, 25-17, 25-17 for their third win of the season over the Warhawks. Meyer led the Titans with a team-high eight kills and three service aces and Maciejewski had six digs and three solo blocks. Schinner dished out 14 assists.

In the championship match, UW-Oshkosh II was pushed to the limit to record their fourth win over Marquette University II this season, 25-18, 21-25, 15-12.

The Titans' potent offense was help in check for most of the match as the team only registered 24 kills in the contest. Held to only one kill through the first two sets, Mattingly came up big in the third set with four kills in four attempts.

Maciejewski finished the match with seven kills, three service aces and two solos blocks and Schinner had 20 assists. Callaway led the defensive corps with six digs and Mattingly had five digs. The Titans struggled at the service line with 16 miscues.

"We didn't play our best volleyball but we came up with big plays when we needed them," said assistant coach Matt Lewin. "Winning seven straight regular season conference titles is something that proves the toughness of our players and the overall talent level at UW-Oshkosh."
