UW-Oshkosh Beats Lakeland College For Lead in WVC (3-5-09)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team took a huge step in winning the regular season Wisconsin Volleyball Conference title with a tough, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 victory over rival Lakeland College on Thursday (March 5) in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh (22-4, 8-0 WVC) started out strong dominating play in the opening two sets with consistent hitting and serving. The Titans put down 13 and 16 kills, respectively in the first two stanzas, while tacking on four service aces. Despite only hitting .067 in the third set, UW-Oshkosh had a chance to pull out the sweep when Bill Meidenbauer (Fr. - Waukesha) closed a 22-18 deficit to a 22-22 deadlock on his serve. After a failed free ball attempt, the Titans closed the set with two hitting errors giving the set to the Muskies. The fourth set was a back and fourth affair until the Titans pulled ahead 17-14 on a let serve by Nate Sederberg (Sr. - Racine). UW-Oshkosh did not relinquish the lead and ended the match on a kill by John Erickson (Sr. - Ripon). "We played with a lot of intensity for most of the match tonight," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We stayed even-keeled and did not panic when Lakeland College put pressure on us. Danny Hessling (Sr. - Greenfield) started off slow hitting but really turned it on in the end and Dan Ruys (So. - Kimberly) had some big kills at the end of the fourth set." Sederberg led UW-Oshkosh with 10 kills, 28 assists and nine digs. Hessling added 12 kills on 19 error less attempts and had a match-high seven blocks. Erickson tallied 10 kills and Tyler Boddy (So. - New Ulm, Minn.) amassed nine kills and seven digs. Aaron Wayne (Sr. - New Berlin) chalked up 10 digs and three service aces and Andy Schinner (So. - Mequon) dished out 27 assists. Despite an off night hitting, Meidenbauer did manage to put down eight kills and came up big behind the service line with four aces. "The only negative on the night was our serving at the end of the match," added Schaefer. "We put a lot of pressure on our serve receive and offense because of missing so many serves. We have to be more clutch when it comes to that aspect of our game and have the mind-set to give our blocking and defense a chance." Lakeland College (21-5, 6-1 WVC) was led by Joe Julkowski with 12 kills, Mitch Wiskirchen registered 34 assists and Andrew Cheever tallied 13 digs.
