Zachary Johnson Joins List of Middle Blocker Recruits (4-8-09)
Zachary Johnson, a 6-6 player from Mequon has decided to join an already impressive list of middle blocking recruits that have decided to continue their education and play men's volleyball at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
"Zach is really going to help us offensively and defensively in the front row next year," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "He is tall and quick, giving us options for him to swing anywhere along the net next year. Middle blocking is a tough position and with the addition of the three recruits we have coming to UW-Oshkosh and the current players we have on the team that will be one of our strongest positions."
Johnson joins Marshall Davis and Harris Jorgenson as middle blockers, as well as David Catoe, Dominic Judkins, Kyle Ketterhagen and Nick Mueller as incoming 2009 fall recruits for head coach Brian Schaefer.
Johnson has had success playing for both Homestead High School and North Shore junior Olympic volleyball club. For the Highlanders, he was a three-year varsity starter and went to state with UW-Oshkosh team members Steve Meyer and Andrew Schinner his sophomore year.
As a senior he had a break-out season, gaining All-Greater Metro First-Team all-conference honors, as well as being named All-State Honorable Mention playing for head coach Dana Mortellaro.
Currently, he is a member of the North Shore junior Olympic volleyball club under the direction of head coach Brad Kuehl. North Shore is considered as one of the best clubs in the Midwest on a yearly basis.
He is the son of David and Gayle Johnson and is undecided on an intended major at UW-Oshkosh.
"The reason I chose UW-Oshkosh is that it is a great place for me to further my education and my volleyball career," commented Johnson. "They have a great team and also offer me a lot of opportunities for possible majors."
