Oshkosh Takes First Meeting Over Lakeland (2-4-10)
In what will surely be a heated battle every time this season, the UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team took the first contest this season over Lakeland College on Thursday (Feb. 4) in Kolf Sports Center. After winning set one convincingly, the Titans snuck out sets two and three in a 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 sweep over the Muskies. UW-Oshkosh entered the contest ranked second, and Lakeland College 10th in the first National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division I poll. "Neither teams played sharp tonight," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We were off on our passing that led us to misfire in the middle. A match like this gives us a good opportunity to see what we need to work on in practice." Five players had at least two kills in the first set, as Nathan Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) distributed the offense with 11 assists on a .440 team hitting percentage. Despite only hitting .230 in set two, the Titans prevailed behind the strong blocking of Dan Ruys (Jr. - Kimberly) as he recorded three stuffs, including two solo blocks. The Titans registered six as team in the stanza. After six ties in set three, UW-Oshkosh (4-0/4-0 WVC) inched out to a 21-17 lead before Lakeland College closed to within 22-21. From there the teams traded points until Danny Hessling (Sr. - Greenfield) ended the match on one of his three kills in the set. Tyler Boddy (Jr. - New Ulm, Minn.) led the team with nine kills, followed by the seven of Ruys, and six each by Hessling and Bill Meidenbauer (So. - Waukesha). Aaron Wayne (Sr. - New Berlin) gobbled up nine digs and Sederberg finished with 32 assists and five digs. Eric Xiong (Fr. - Green Bay) chipped in five digs and one service ace and Ruys finished with eight blocks. Boddy tallied five blocks and Hessling and Sederberg four as UW-Oshkosh clamped 15 Muskies' attacks in the match.
