UW-Oshkosh Adds Two More 2009 Recruits (1-10-08)
Ian LaPhilliph, a 6-2 left side hitter from Madison and Cole Holmes, a 6-2 right side hitter from Lake Bluff, Illinois have decided to attend UW-Oshkosh and play for the men's club volleyball team according to head coach Brian Schaefer. The duo joins William Brydon as the Titans' committed 2008-2009 athletes for the reigning two-time NIRSA Division I national champions.

"We are excited to have Ian and Cole joining our team next year," said Schaefer. "I know that they both felt that UW-Oshkosh would be a good fit for them when they visited the campus. As soon as they got accepted it was a done deal. Both will add depth to our already strong team."

LaPhilliph hails from Madison West High School where he was a two-time First Team All-Conference performer in the Big Eight Conference playing for head coach Aaron Blom. As a Regent, he was a two-year starter on the varsity team.

Currently LaPhilliph is a member of the Nightmares 18-1's junior Olympic volleyball team that is coached by Fabio Mendes and is directed by former Titans player Jon Ellmann. LaPhillip will study computer science at UW-Oshkosh and is the son of Kathy and John.

An accomplished tennis player, LaPhilliph was named Second Team All-State last year and First Team All-Conference as a sophomore and junior in number one doubles. In 2006 and 2007 he and his tennis partner advanced to the third round of the WIAA state doubles tournament at number one doubles.

"Ian is very athletic and has the hand-eye coordination that is vital in men's volleyball. His accomplishments on the tennis courts will only carry over onto the volleyball court."

"UW-Oshkosh has the perfect campus for me, not too small and not too big." said LaPhilliph. "With the opportunity to continue playing at a highly competitive level, while at the same time getting a quality education, I felt there was no other choice for me than UW-Oshkosh."

With one year remaining in his high school career, Holmes has already made his mark at Lake Forest Academy High School playing for head coach Ray Warner. He started for the Scouts last year in the always tough North Suburban Conference and started for two undefeated teams his freshmen and sophomore seasons.

Currently Holmes plays for head coach Bobby Bull for Adversity Select junior Olympic volleyball team as well and is currently undecided on an intended major at UW-Oshkosh. He is the son of Jodie and Glenn and was named cum laude on the national Latin exam his sophomore and junior year.

"Landing another player outside the Wisconsin border is important for UW-Oshkosh," added Schaefer. "There is a ton of talent in Illinois and it's important to be able to offer a great place to play volleyball and to get a quality education. Cole will get both of those in a Titans uniform."

"I wanted to find a good place to play volleyball," said Holmes. "After touring the campus I realized that UW-Oshkosh could give me more than that, so I'm excited to be attending the University."

In 2006 and 2007, the UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team captured the NIRSA Division I national championship. The Titans also finished second in 2005 and fifth in 2003 and 2004 at the Division I level and claimed third in 2005 and 2007 and second in 2006 at the NIRSA Division III national championship.
