UW-Oshkosh II Starts Season With Win (1-19-08)
The Division II UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team started the 2008 season in winning fashion by sweeping Marquette University II 30-22, 30-23 in a match held on Friday (Jan. 18) in Kolf Sports Center.
Led by four consecutive kills by Mike Cotter (So. • Appleton), the Titans gradually pulled away to take the game. Despite eight missed serves, the team managed 15 kills and four blocks in the stanza.
In game two, UW-Oshkosh relied on defense, piling up 14 digs to go along with 13 kills to gain the sweep. Cotter and Chris Schinner (Jr. • Mequon) each had four kills in the game and Cotter added four digs and two service aces.
For the match Cotter led the team with eight kills and three service aces. Schinner finished with six kills and Bradie Williams (Fr. • Middleton) dished out 23 assists and added five digs and three blocks in his collegiate debut. Jim Hall (Jr. • Appleton) led the team with six digs and Mike Callaway (Sr. • Waukesha) added five kills.
"It was a good start to our season," said assistant coach Matt Lewin. "We have a mix of newcomers and veterans on this team and we are beginning to mesh."
The UW-Oshkosh Division II team is the five-time defending Wisconsin Volleyball Conference junior varsity champions and took third place last year at the NIRSA Division III national championship.
