UW-Oshkosh Prevails Over Carthage College (1-23-08)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team recorded it's second consecutive sweep in Wisconsin Volleyball Conference action with an impressive 30-11, 30-23, 30-17 win over the Carthage College club team on Wednesday (Jan. 23) in Kolf Sports Center.
UW-Oshkosh (2-0/2-0 WVC) sprinted to a 10-2 advantage behind a six-point scoring run on the serve of Danny Hessling (Jr. • Greenfield). The Titans held at an eight-point lead the rest of the way in route to the easy first game victory.
The Titans hit a torrid .791 in game one as Nathan Sederberg (Sr. • Racine) registered eight kills and Tyler Boddy (Fr. • New Ulm, Minn.) was a perfect five for five in kill attempts.
After falling behind 6-2 and 10-8 in game two, The Titans went on an eight-point scoring skein by Andy Schinner (Fr. • Mequon) to take a 16-10 advantage. From there, UW-Oshkosh maintained at least a six-point advantage to go up two games to none in the match. The Titans slammed down 22 kills in the game, led by seven by Boddy, six by Sederberg and five from John Erickson (Sr. • Ripon).
Game three was all UW-Oshkosh as the team finished the sweep. Dan Ruys (Fr. • Kimberly) had four kills and Erickson had two blocks, including one solo in the game.
Sederberg led the team with 15 kills for a .636 hitting percentage and added seven digs. Boddy tallied 12 kills and five digs and Erickson collected 11 kills on 14 errorless attempts for a glossy .786 hitting percentage. Aaron Wayne (Sr. • New Berlin) had a team-leading eight digs and Eric Waite (So. • Madison) scooped up five digs.
Splitting time, Schinner and Brandon Kirkland (Sr. • Racine) had 19 and 18 assists, respectively. The Titans ended the match with 54 kills, 34 digs, nine service aces and seven blocks. UW-Oshkosh finished hitting .478 on the night.
"We took the wind out of their sails right after the first serve," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We served incredibly well in the first game and the momentum carried us throughout the match. It was good to get Erickson going as we will need a balanced attack in our upcoming tournament."
