Oshkosh III Newcomers Get First Win (1-24-08)
After surrendering the first game, the UW-Oshkosh III men's volleyball team won the next three games by a combined nine points to beat Northland Baptist Bible College in a non-conference match held Thursday (Jan. 24) in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh's winning scores were 23-30, 30-26, 30-28, 30-27.
Tied at 5-5 in the first game, Northland Baptist Bible College scored eight consecutive points to burst out to a 13-5 advantage. After the Titans closed the gap to 17-16, the Pioneers went on a 13-7 scoring run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Thirteen hitting errors hampered the Titans as they only hit .023 in the first stanza. Brian Fox (Fr. • Fond du Lac) paced UW-Oshkosh with five kills in the frame.
Game two was close throughout as neither team held more than a three-point lead until Mark Beck (Jr. • Darboy) served six straight points for a 27-23 cushion. The Titans won the game on a Pioneers' missed serve. Luke Wyngaard (Fr. • Kimberly) slammed down five kills on six attempts in the game to pace the Titans.
UW-Oshkosh held a 15-10 lead in game three until Northland Baptist Bible College whittled away at the advantage until they went ahead 27-25 to force a Titans' time-out. After the break, he Titans scored five out of the next six points, including a game-point kill by Miles Kraczek (Jr. • Cameron) to take a 2-1 game lead in the match.
Kraczek led the Titans in game fourth with five kills as the hosts pulled out to a 25-20 lead and hung on for the victory. Mike Murphy (Jr. • Richland Center) and Wyngaard added three kills for UW-Oshkosh.
"This was the first collegiate match for eight of the ten guys on the roster," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We were a little nervous to start the match but eventually we got more in the sync and committed less mental errors."
Wyngaard led the team with 14 kills for a .473 hitting percentage and added eight blocks. Kraczek slammed down 12 kills and scooped up eight digs and Greg Lulich (Jr. • Ashland) has a team-high 16 digs. Alex Reynolds (So. • South Milwaukee) added 12 digs and three blocks and Murphy had eight kills. Mike Heup (Fr. • Oconomowoc) dished out 40 assists and Fox finished with five kills, five digs and seven assists after injuring his ankle early in the second game.
For the match UW-Oshkosh had 59 digs, 55 kills, 51 assists, 11 blocks and six service aces.
"Wyngaard and Kraczek had very good matches for us tonight," said assistant coach Matt Lewin. "If we can stay aggressive at the service line and at the net we will be a top team in our conference."
