Oshkosh Beats Lakeland at Home (2-11-08)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team beat arch rival Lakeland College, 30-25, 32-30, 26-30, 30-20 in a key Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match held on Monday (Feb. 11) in Kolf Sports Center. With the win the Titans remain undefeated in the WVC, while the Muskies sustained their first loss.
UW-Oshkosh (15-1/3-0 WVC) started off strong in the first and second game by slamming down 18 and 24 kills, respectively to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Danny Hessling (Jr. • Greenfield) and Tyler Boddy (Fr. • New Ulm, Minn.) each had four kills in the first game.
The Titans build a 21-11 lead in game two by siding out 12 straight times on the Muskies serve and tacking on a few points on their own. After an 8-2 run by Lakeland College (10-2/5-1 WVC) cut the deficit to 23-20, the team traded points until the 26-23 mark. Again the Muskies inched to within 27-26 before both combatants traded points until the Titans ended the game on a kill by Hessling.
Nate Sederberg (Sr. • Racine) tallied eight kills and Boddy added five in game two.
UW-Oshkosh's offense went south in game three as they only managed 10 kills on 38 attempts while adding eight hitting errors. The Titans also committed seven service errors in the stanza.
Game four was all Titans as they received five kills each from Boddy and Sederberg, hitting .487 on 18 total kills. Boddy added two solo blocks in game four. Ahead 9-8 to start the game, the Titans finished the match with a 21-12 scoring run.
UW-Oshkosh was led by Boddy who had 20 kills on 34 attempts and added eight digs and three blocks. Sederberg followed closely with 19 kills and tacked on 12 digs and two service aces. Aaron Wayne (Sr. • New Berlin) led the team with 21 digs and Andy Schinner (Fr. • Racine) dished out 49 assists and scooped up 10 digs. Hessling and John Erickson (Sr. • Ripon) each added 11 kills and Brandon Kirkland (Sr. • Racine) contributed 13 assists, all in the fourth game.
UW-Oshkosh entered the match ranked number one and Lakeland College number four in the latest NIRSA Division I national poll. UW-Oshkosh has now won 123 of its last 130 matches.
