Oshkosh II Back in the Win Column (2-13-08)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team got back to its winning ways with a tough 33-31, 30-24, 30-27 victory over Northland Baptist Bible College on Wednesday (Feb. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.
UW-Oshkosh (12-2) built a sizable 19-10 and 25-18 lead in game one before Northland Baptist Bible College came back behind tough serving and some hitting miscues by the Titans. Trailing 28-25, the Pioneers outscored the Titans 5-2 to tie the score at 30-30. After exchanging points, UW-Oshkosh took game one with a kill by Mike Cotter (So. • Appleton).
Despite having 15 kills in the first game, the Titans were hampered by 10 service aces. "It has been a constant struggle for our entire team," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "Our jump serving has been hurting us more than helping us and we need to get better at that in order to keep our opponents' offense in check."
Game two was solid for the Titans as they slammed down 15 kills and had three less hitting errors than the first stanza. Mike Callaway (Sr. • Waukesha) had five of those kills. "Our setters were making better choices in game two and were spreading out the offense," added Schaefer. "They are working hard in practice on their footwork and placement and it will carry onto the court."
The final game was close throughout as neither team has more than a five-point cushion. With UW-Oshkosh leading 22-17, Northland Baptist Bible College scored four consecutive points to dart to within one point at 22-21. The two team traded points for four serves to make the score 24-23 in favor of the Titans. UW-Oshkosh finished the match by taking six out of the last ten points to finish off the sweep. Luke Wyngaard (Fr. • Kimberly) led the Titans with five kills on seven errorless attempts in the game as the team combined for 18 kills.
Callaway and Cotter each ended the match with 12 kills, while Callaway added a team-leading seven digs. Jim Hall (Jr. • Appleton) and Justin Soukup (So. • Madison) each collected six digs and Gus Odorizzi (Fr. • Pleasant Prairie) had six kills and four blocks. Bradie Williams (Fr. • Cross Plains) dished out 30 assists and Ryan Schutlz (Fr. • Wauwatosa) had nine assists and five digs.
