Titans Win on Senior Night (3-10-08)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyballs team won its 10th straight Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match with a 30-26, 30-20, 28-30, 30-25 victory over UW-La Crosse in a match held on Sunday (March 9) at Oshkosh Lourdes High School.
UW-Oshkosh (38-2/10-0 WVC) entered the contest as the #1 ranked team in the latest NIRSA Division I poll and UW-La Crosse as the #3 ranked team in the NIRSA Division II.
Nathan Sederberg (Sr. • Racine) led the team with 15 kills and added eight digs. Nathan Malewiski (Sr. • New Franken) tallied 12 kills and John Erickson (Sr. • Racine) and Dan Ruys (Fr. • Kimberly) each had 11 kills as the Titans slammed down 64 in the match. Ruys achieved his total on only 12 attempts without an error and added a team-leading six blocks.
Aaron Wayne (Sr. • New Berlin) paced the Titans with nine digs and Brandon Kirkland (Sr. • Racine) dished out 44 assists. Danny Hessling (Jr. • Racine) added nine kills and four blocks and Andy Schinner (Fr. • Mequon) contributed 15 assists, all in the fourth game.
"I was afraid of a letdown by the team after a long weekend at the Midwest Ten championship," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "But the team remained focused starting with warm-ups and it carried into the match. UW-La Crosse is a very good team with some amazing athletes so I am very pleased with our performance."
Kurt Breier (Sr. • Kimberly), Jordan Jung (Sr. • New Berlin), Kirkland and Malewiski, UW-Oshkosh's four graduating seniors were honored before the match for their years of dedication to the team.
"There is nothing new I can say about our four graduating players that I have not said before," added Schaefer. "They are outstanding young men on and off the court and I am honored to have coached them throughout their careers. They have made numerous sacrifices to be a part of the Titans program and they will be missed when that last ball hits the floor this season."
