UW-Oshkosh II Wins St. Ambrose University Tournament (3-17-08)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team won its 11th straight match to capture the St. Ambrose University St. Patty's Day tournament held on Sunday (March 16) in Davenport, Iowa.
The Titans had little trouble in the opening pool play matches, sweeping the University of Missouri II 25-20, 25-16, Bradley University 25-18, 25-16 and Augustana College 25-17, 25-15 to gain the number one seed into the single elimination tournament.
Mike Cotter (So. • Appleton) led UW-Oshkosh against the University of Missouri with nine kills on 11 attempts and Mike Callaway (Sr. • Waukesha) contributed five kills, three service aces and three blocks. Gus Odorizzi (Fr. • Pleasant Prairie) had five blocks and Bradie Williams (Fr. • Cross Plains) dished out 20 assists.
Jordan Mattingly (Fr. • Kaukauna), coming back from an ankle injury, had seven kills in eight attempts and tied a tournament high with six service aces against Bradley University. Williams again led the offense with 19 helpers and Odorizzi had two solo blocks.
Cotter achieved seven kills and five digs against Augustana College. Jim Hall (Jr. • Appleton) had nine digs and Williams dished out 14 assists. Ryan Schultz (Fr. • Wauwatosa) had ten assists and Odorizzi slammed down six kills on eight attempts.
In the semifinals of the tournament, the Titans faced a familiar opponent in UW-Oshkosh III winning 25-15, 22-25, 17-15. After winning the first game with ease, UW-Oshkosh was pushed to the limit after losing the second game and trailing 14-11 in game three.
After a side-out brought the Titans to within 14-12 in the deciding third game, Cotter rattled off three straight serves, including one service ace for a 15-14 advantage. After a missed serve knotted the score at 15-15, UW-Oshkosh sided out and then scored the next point to pull out the three-game victory.
In a balanced attack, Callaway, Odorizzi and Chris Schinner (Sr. • Mequon) each had eight kills and Cotter had seven as Williams put up 28 assists. Hall had 17 digs and Cotter ended the contest with six service aces.
In a replay of the championship match of the UW-Oshkosh Invitational, the Titans beat St. Ambrose University junior varsity 25-23, 21-25, 15-12. The Titans were down 13-11 in the first game before Cotter went on a seven-point run to help the team to an 18-13 advantage.
UW-Oshkosh slammed down 17 kills in the first game, led by Odorizzi's six kills. Despite 16 kills in the second game, the Titans had to go to a third-game due to 10 hitting errors and five missed serves. In the deciding third game, UW-Oshkosh had eight kills on 14 kills with only one hitting error.
Odorizzi led the team with 12 kills on 16 attempts and Cotter pitched in nine put downs. Callaway had five kills, four blocks and two service aces. Hall finished the match with six digs and Mattingly and Schinner each had seven kills. Williams finished the contest with 38 assists.
