UW-Oshkosh II Comes Back to Beat Lakeland College II (3-14-08)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to storm back for a 27-30, 25-30, 30-25, 30-24, 16-14 victory over Lakeland College II in a match held on Thursday (March 13) in Sheboygan.

"We had some guys come off the bench and do a good job that helped in the come back," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We could not stop their right side attack to start the match but made some changes that helped us on both sides of the ball."

One line-up change that benefited the Titans was moving Jordan Mattingly (Fr. • Kaukauna) to right side and putting Mike Murphy (Jr. • Richland Center) in the middle. After not registering a kill in the first two games, Mattingly ended the match with nine put downs.

"Jordan was limited due to injury going side to side blocking so switching him to right side helped him settle in offensively," added Schaefer. "He has such a quick approach and did some great things in the front row."

Murphy ended the contest with only four kills and two blocks, but added two key assists in the fifth game to help the Titans gain the number one seed entering the WVC state championship.

"Mike did a lot of positive things on the court that do not appear on the stat sheet," said Schaefer. "He had a lot of touches on blocks and isolated our outside hitters by holding Lakeland College's middle blockers. He played really well."

After knotting the match at 2-2 the Titans had 10 kills and only two hitting errors in the fifth game, led by Mattingly's four kills on four attempts. Tied at 12-12, UW-Oshkosh got a solo block from Bradie Williams (Fr. • Cross Plains) to take a 13-12 lead. After trading side outs until the Titans' lead 15-14, Gus Odorizzi (Fr. • Pleasant Prairie) ended the match with a solo block.

After a rough outing in the last match against the Muskies, Mike Cotter (So. • Appleton) finished with 18 kills, seven serve aces and seven digs. "Mike had something to prove tonight and he played strong and hard," commented Schaefer.

Odorizzi tallied 13 kills and four blocks and Mike Callaway (Sr. • Waukesha) had 11 kills and led the team with five blocks. Jim Hall (Jr. • Appleton) had 18 digs and Williams dished out a career-high 56 assists.
