Titans go 4-1 at Midwest Ten Conference Play Date (2-7-10)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team won its first four matches at the Midwest Ten Conference Play Date, before losing a close contest to rival Lakeland College in three sets on Saturday (Feb. 6) in DeKalb, Ill. UW-Oshkosh (9-1) defeated Northern Illinois University 25-18, 25-22, 23rd ranked University of Notre Dame (Ind.) 25-21, 25-23, Marquette University 25-20, 25-18, Illinois State University 25-18, 22-25, 15-13, before losing to 10th ranked Lakeland College 20-25, 25-22, 18-16. The Titans entered the matches as the second ranked team in the latest National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) poll. "We definitely did not play our best volleyball this weekend," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "I think our win over Lakeland College on Thursday went to our head and there are certain individuals that have to play harder to stay on the court." Zach Johnson (Fr. - Homestead), filling in for an absent Dan Ruys (Jr. - Kimberly), led the team with eight kills against Northern Illinois University. Mike Cotter (Sr. - Appleton) added seven kills, four digs and two service aces and Tyler Boddy (Jr. - New Ulm, Minn.) added five digs and two blocks. Nate Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) dished out 21 assists and had two service aces. Against the University of Notre Dame Harris Jorgenson (Fr. - Burlington) led the team with eight kills. Johnson added seven kills and two service aces and Boddy tallied six kills, three digs and two blocks. Sederberg ran the offense with 21 assists and Aaron Wayne (Sr. - New Berlin) has four digs. "Our freshmen have really played well so far this season," stated Schaefer. "Instead of following they have led us at times. Harris is one of our kill leaders, Zach is a huge block and an instant offensive threat and Eric Xiong (Fr. - Green Bay) is becoming an effective passer and lightning quick defender." Boddy, Jorgenson and Bill Meidenbauer (So. - Waukesha) each had six kills against the Golden Eagles. Danny Hessling (Sr. - Greenfield) added six blocks and Sederberg had 24 assists, four blocks and four digs. Wayne saved five balls and Boddy chipped in four digs and two service aces. UW-Oshkosh had 11 kills in all three stanzas in the three-set win over the Redbirds. Boddy led the team with nine kills, but committed six hitting errors to go along with three digs. Sederberg dished out 28 assists and had eight digs and five service aces. Jorgenson added four service aces and five kills and Johnson slammed down eight kills in 11 attempts, including four in the deciding third set. Hessling contributed six kills and Meidenbauer has three blocks. Despite 13 kills on 16 attempts by Boddy against the Muskies, the Titans could not get enough offensive support from other players in the loss. Jorgenson added 10 kills, but the rest of the team only managed 11 put downs in the narrow defeat. Sederberg assisted on 33 kills and added a tournament high nine digs and Hessling had a match-high seven blocks. Meidenbauer added four blocks and Johnson had three. The Titans struggled at the service line by only generating one service ace, compared to 12 service errors. "Both Lakeland College and us have beaten each other without one of their best players," added Schaefer. "We get to redeem ourselves next week when we play them at their place. We have something to prove to ourselves and to each other and it should be an outstanding match."
