UW-Oshkosh Beats UW-Whitewater in WVC Action (2-17-10)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team survived a horrible hitting performance in the first set to come back from a 1-0 deficit to beat UW-Whitewater 21-25, 25-16, 25-22, 26-24 in Wisconsin Volleyball Conference action on Tuesday (Feb. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.

With the win UW-Oshkosh (12-1/8-0 WVC) holds a two match lead in the loss column over Lakeland College, UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater in its quest for the regular season conference title. Last season UW-Oshkosh shared the title with Lakeland College.

The first set was marred by hitting errors by UW-Oshkosh as they hit -.125 on 13 miscues. "We underestimated UW-Whitewater's size and athleticism," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "Our setting selection was fine but we were not hitting smart shots and got solo blocked way too much. Once we settled down and found our groove we played better on the offensive side of things."

After falling behind in the match, the Titans responded by slamming down 16 kills in each of the next three sets to take the contest in four sets. After 13 hitting errors in the first set, UW-Oshkosh combined to only hit 10 the rest of the way.

"Our side-out offense was great, despite not our best passing night," added Schaefer. "I am pleased that we were able to side out consistently because we needed to because we couldn't stop UW-Whitewater's offense."

With UW-Oshkosh leading 2-1, the fourth game was close throughout with neither team having more than a three-point lead. With UW-Oshkosh serving at 17-15, 13 consecutive points were scored by the receiving team to bring the score to 23-22 in favor of the Titans.

With UW-Whitewater serving, they recorded an overpass kill to knot the score at 23-23. Both teams traded side outs until Danny Hessling (Sr. - Greenfield) and Harris Jorgenson (Fr. - Burlington) combined for a block to give the Titans the 26-24 victory.

UW-Oshkosh finished with four players in double-digit kills with Tyler Boddy (Jr. - New Ulm, Minn.) registering 13, Bill Meidenbauer (So. - Waukesha) 12, Dan Ruys (Jr. - Kimberly) 11 and Hessling 10.

Nate Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) finished with 48 assists, four blocks and two service aces, Aaron Wayne (Sr. - New Berlin) and Eric Xiong (Fr. - Green Bay) each had six digs and Hessling, Jorgenson and Sederberg each had four blocks. Jorgenson chipped in four service aces and after a shaky start offensively finished with seven kills and did not have a hitting error after set one.

The Titans overcame 18 service errors and nine receiving errors in the match by hitting a combined .521 in sets two, three and four.
