Oshkosh II Reaches Final of the Iowa Spring Fling (3-7-10)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team proved that they are a frontrunner for the NCVF Division III national title by capturing second place at the 21-team University of Iowa tournament on Saturday and Sunday (March 6-7) in Iowa City, Iowa.

The Titans (34-1) opened up play by beating St. Olaf College (Minn.), 25-13, 25-12, 33-35, 25-18 and Providence College (Canada), 21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-16 to place first in their pool. Providence College entered the tournament as the third-ranked team in the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division II poll.

Jordan Mattingly (Jr. - Kaukauna) led the Titans against the Oles with 20 kills and Nick Mueller (Fr. - Kenosha) added 15, Gus Odorizzi (Jr. - Pleasant Prairie) nine and Matt Maciejewski (So. - Greenfield) seven.

Bob Hall (Fr. - Appleton) dished out 51 assists, Jim Hall (Sr. - Appleton) added 10 digs and Odorizzi had six blocks. Mueller added five blocks and two service aces and Greg Lulich (Sr. - Ashland) provided two service aces and four digs.

Against Providence College Mueller led the team with 13 kills and five digs. Mattingly added 12 kills, four service aces, four digs and three block solos and Jim Hall had three service aces and four digs. Bob Hall ran the offense with 37 assists and had five blocks and Odorizzi patrolled the front court with seven blocks.

In the second pool of the day, UW-Oshkosh II grabbed the fourth-seed of the tournament for Sunday's single elimination play by beating NCVF Division II tenth-ranked UW-Eau Claire, 25-17, 26-28, 15-12 and St. Ambrose University II (Iowa), 27-25, 25-22.

Bob Hall led the Titans against the Blugolds with 26 assists, five digs and three blocks. Mueller provided nine kills, Mattingly seven and Maciejewski and Odorizzi six.

In their second match this year against the Fighting Bees, the Titans were led by Maciejewski who had nine kills. Odorizzi added seven kills and Bob Hall 28 assists.

On Sunday, the Titans started off in the quarterfinals with a hard-fought, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10 victory over the host school University of Iowa. Maciejewski slammed down 10 kills, Odorizzi eight and Mattingly six. Bob Hall dished out 24 assists and had five digs and three blocks and Luke Coyle (So. - Wauwatosa) stuffed six attempts. Lulich scooped up five digs and Maciejewski had four digs and three solo blocks, all in the deciding third frame.

In the semifinals, UW-Oshkosh II played fellow WVC member UW-Whitewater and prevailed, 25-14, 22-25, 15-13. The Warhawks sit ranked 22nd in the latest NCVF Division I poll.

Odorizzi was nearly unstoppable in the match, tallying ten kills on 15 attempts. Maciejewski and Mueller each had eight kills and Bob Hall amassed 30 assists and five digs. Jim Hall collected five digs and Lulich totaled two service aces.

In the championship match, the Titans went to a deciding third-set for the fourth time in the tournament but fell this time 17-25, 25-22, 17-15 to the University of Missouri. The second-place finish marked the best finish for UW-Oshkosh II at the tournament.

UW-Oshkosh II used good balance offensively as Mueller and Mattingly each had eight kills, Maciejewski seven and Odorizzi six, including four in the third set. Mattingly nabbed four service aces and six digs, Jim Hall tallied nine digs and Mueller collected three service aces. Bob Hall once again led the offense with 26 assists and Odorizzi finished with three blocks.
