Oshkosh I Wins the Las Vegas Open Crown (3-22-10)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team proved that it is a team that can claim its third NCVF Division I national title by winning the 32-team Las Vegas Open on Friday and Saturday (March 19-20) in Nevada. UW-Oshkosh (37-3) opened pool play on Friday by beating the University of Utah, 25-19, 27-25, the University of Texas, 25-19, 25-22 and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, 25-23, 26-16 to hold its second-seed. The Titans, ranked fourth in the latest NCVF Division I poll was led by Tyler Boddy (Jr. - New Ulm, Minn.) and Bill Meidenbauer (So. - Waukesha) with eight kills in the win over the Utes. Danny Hessling (Sr. - Greenfield) and Dan Ruys (Jr. - Darboy) each had five kills and Nate Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) dished out 24 assists. Ruys led the team with four blocks and Mike Cotter (Sr. - Appleton) added four stuffs. Boddy had a team-high four digs. All eight front-row players had at least two kills in the win over the Longhorns. Boddy put down eight kills to pace UW-Oshkosh and Meidenbauer and Sederberg each had six put-aways. Boddy led the Titans with six digs and added three blocks and two service aces and Sederberg provided 26 assists and four digs and Ruys had three blocks. Boddy continued his hot play against hometown UNLV with nine kills. Meidenbauer provided seven digs and two service aces and Aaron Wayne (Sr. - New Berlin) tacked on six digs. Sederberg ran the offense with 25 assists and also scooped up five digs. UW-Oshkosh opened up play on Saturday by destroying Utah Valley University II, 25-20, 25-9. The Titans had five players with four kills, including Zach Johnson (Fr. - Mequon) who was a perfect four for four. Sederberg complied 16 assists, Andrew Schinner (Jr. - Mequon) seven assists and Boddy three service aces. Wayne led the team with four digs. In the quarterfinals, UW-Oshkosh slammed down 32 kills, including 18 in the first frame to beat the University of Colorado, 25-20, 25-16. Sederberg assisted on 25 of those kills and Boddy and Ruys each had eight kills. Hessling and Meidenbauer notched six kills and Ruys amassed four blocks. The Titans reached the title match with a 25-22, 25-18 win over eighth-ranked University of California-Berkeley. The Titans only had three hitting errors in the match as Meidenbauer racked up nine kills and Boddy eight on nine errorless attempts. Hessling and Ruys each added five kills and Sederberg dished out 28 assists. Harris Jorgenson (Fr. - Burlington) and Ruys stuffed four attempts and Wayne had seven digs. UW-Oshkosh relied on its blocking to capture its second Las Vegas Open title in three attempts by defeating fifth-ranked Utah Valley University, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13. Boddy, Hessing and Ruys each had four blocks as the Titans had 10 total team blocks in the match. Meidenbauer and Wayne each had three service aces and Sederberg totaled 26 assists and three blocks. Boddy had 11 kills and Meidenbauer produced eight kills on 11 attempts. "This is the highest level of volleyball we have played all season", said head coach Brian Schaefer. "The guys fought every point, played well as a team and their attitude on the court was rewarded." Sederberg was named most valuable player and Boddy and Ruys were named to the all-tournament team. "This weekend was a great team-building time for the team," added Schaefer "The only downer was the injury to Mike Cotter who suffered a knee injury against the University of Colorado. It is a shame, as he was playing really hard and well on the left-side. I have no doubt, however that Harry (Jorgenson) will do a great job and that we will keep things going heading into nationals."
