UW-Oshkosh II Claims Runner-up at MIVA Division II Championship (3-29-10)
The UW-Oshkosh II team took second place at the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Division II championship on Saturday and Sunday (Marc 27-28) in Oshkosh. The University of Illinois II won its seventh straight Division II crown by defeating UW-Oshkosh II in the finals 25-22, 25-20. The Titans claimed its third, second-place finish in the last four years and fourth overall. Earlier in the season the Titans claimed their first MIVA Division II regular season title with a perfect 10-0 mark after not participating in the league last season. The Titans (50-5) won their opening pool by defeating Purdue University II (Ind.), 25-17, 25-14, Michigan State University II, 25-15, 26-24, Earlham College (Ind.), 25-16, 25-10 and Indiana University II, 25-14, 25-19. Highlighting pool play were Dominic Judkins (Fr. - Kaukauna) with a four for four kill performance against Purdue University II, Gus Odorizzi (Jr. - Kenosha) with eight kills and Bob Hall (Fr. - Appleton) with 26 assists against Michigan State University II and Nick Mueller (Fr. - Kenosha) with a seven for seven kill result against Earlham College. In bracket play on Sunday, the Titans got the better of Purdue University II 25-12, 25-17 in the quarterfinals and Michigan State University II, 25-15, 25-17 in the semifinals before reaching the finals. Nick Mueller (Fr. - Kenosha) led the team with seven kills in eight attempts against the Boilermakers. Chris Schinner (Sr. - Mequon) added four kills on four attempts, Bob Hall dished out 19 assists and added three service aces and Gross and Jordan Mattingly (Jr. - Kaukauna) had two blocks. Luke Coyle (So. - Wauwatosa) and Odorizzi led the team with seven kills against the Spartans. Bob Hall dished out 19 assists and had four digs and Parker Gross (So. - Appleton) chipped in four kills. In the finals Mueller racked up seven kills, Mattingly five and Gross four as Bob Hall handed out 23 assists. Jim Hall (Sr. - Appleton) had five digs, Mattingly and Mueller four and Gross three blocks. With their performance at the MIVA championship and the Las Vegas Open where they defeated three top-15 Division I teams, the Titans will enter the NCVF Division III national championship as a top-team to beat.
