UW-Oshkosh Sweeps UW-Whitewater to Start 2015 Season (1-24-15)
The UW-Oshkosh men's volleyball team started off its 2015 season with a convincing sweep over conference foe UW-Whitewater 25-15, 25-19, 25-13 on Friday (Jan. 23) in Kolf Sports Center. It was the first Wisconsin Volleyball Conference match for both teams.
The reigning National Collegiate Volleyball Federation Division I national champions were led by Allen Grunert (So. - Muskego) with 10 kills on a .563 hitting percentage. Wesley Morioka (Jr. - Chicago, Ill.) tallied nine kills on a robust .750 hitting percentage and Jake Ahnert (Sr. - Burlington) and Tyler Range (Jr. - Kenosha) each had five kills and three blocks in two sets of action.
Travis Hudson (Jr. - Wauwatosa) dished out 31 assists and added two service aces and two blocks and Tyler Wiedenhoeft (Sr. - Mequon) led the team with six digs, all in the first set.
For the match the Titans hit .484 on 40 kills and added nine service aces, eight blocks and 35 assists. UW-Oshkosh hit .609 in set one and closed out the match by hitting .714 in set three.
"It was a complete win for us tonight," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "We have a lot of experience on the court and our offense was overpowering. The match was actually closer than the scores indicated, as UW-Whitewater played very well with some tough defense. We missed a few to many serves (12) but had nine service aces and keep them out of sync for most of the night on offense."
"It is nice to see Tony Mack (So. - Muskego) and Allen Grunert playing well," added Schaefer. "We are excited that they transferred and they are filling holes we lost to graduation. I am sure they were a little nervous tonight but overcame that and really produced in the front row."
