UW-Oshkosh II Takes Second at Augustana College Invitational (1-25-15)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team started off the 2015 season by beating two Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Division I opponents in route to a second place finish at the 10-team Augustana College (Ill.) Invitational on Saturday (January 24) in Rock Island, Illinois.
UW-Oshkosh II (3-1-2 Overall) split with Iowa State University II, 25-21, 23-25, defeated UW-Whitewater 25-19, 25-17, split with Lewis University, 25-16, 21-25 and beat St. Ambrose University II, 25-18, 25-19 to finish first in their pool.
In their opening match against the Cyclones, Tanner Swan (So. - Brookfield) led the Titans with seven kills and added four blocks. Adam Landgraf (Jr. - Kenosha) distributed 19 assists and scooped up five digs and Alex Harty (So. - Racine) recorded five saves in the back court. Zach Tazalla (So. - Whitefish Bay) recorded six kills.
In its win over UW-Whitewater the Titans secured seven kills from Swan as all front row players for UW-Oshkosh had at least one kill. Landgraf led the offense with 21 assists and Nate Leitermann (So. - Brookfield) tallied three blocks, including two solo stuffs. The Titans hit .609 in the match and only had three hitting errors.
Swan once again led the Titans in its match against Lewis University with eight kills. Sammy Pedersen (So. - Muskego) was a perfect five for five on kill attempts. Landgraf dished out 16 assist and Noah Mader (Fr. - Middleton) tallied a team best four blocks. Harty had seven digs for the Titans.
In its final pool play match to determine first place UW-Oshkosh dominated St. Ambrose University II behind a balance offensive attack. Pedersen and Swan each had five kills and Leitermann added four in the win. Landgraf once again doled out 16 assists, Harty had nine digs and Tazalla ended the match with five digs and two blocks.
For the fifth consecutive match Swan led the Titans in kills with eight in its 25-17, 25-21 semifinal win over Wheaton College. Leitermann collected on six kills and Melton had four blocks. Tazalla provided six digs, Pedersen five digs and Landgraf had 17 assists, five blocks and three digs. He also keep the Thunder defense guessing by connecting on four out of four kill attempts.
In the championship match against St. Ambrose University the Titans lost a close first set and then could not get anything going offensively in the set frame in a 25-23, 25-9 loss.
Pedersen paced the Titans offense with four kills and Tazalla and Landgraf each had four digs. Landgraf finished with 14 assists as UW-Oshkosh struggled with only 17 kills on a .132 hitting percentage.
"It was a very good start to the season for our young Division II team," said head coach Will Brydon. "We ran out of gas at the end, but beat some good teams, including WVC Division I teams UW-Whitewater and Wheaton College during the day. Everybody got to play a lot and that was the main objective heading into the weekend."
