UW-Oshkosh III Loses Heartbreaker to Marquette University II (3-5-15)
Despite a valiant comeback in the deciding third set, the UW-Oshkosh III men's volleyball team fell 30-28, 25-27, 24-22 to Marquette University II in a non-conference match held on Wednesday (March 4) at Kolf Sports Center.
After splitting the tight first two sets, UW-Oshkosh III found itself down 14-9 before Andrew Shea (So. - Brookfield) tallied five straight serves to knot the score at 14-14. From there the fun began. Marquette University II served for the match on three separate occasions before UW-Oshkosh III finally took a 19-18 advantage. Swinging for match point, a hitting error by the Titans tied the contest at 19-19. The Titans held leads of 20-19, 21-20 and 22-21 but could not find a point. A two-point run by the Golden Eagles after a side-out gave them the victory at 24-22 in a trilling affair.
Shea led the Titans with 10 kills on a team-leading 31 swings and added two blocks. Tate Cocking (Fr. - Appleton), Trent Farrell (Fr. - New Berlin) and Josh Preiss (Jr. - New Berlin) each added seven kills and Cocking led the team with seven blocks.
Steve Cotton (So. - Muskego), Joe Kuchler (So. - Muskego) and Andy Rowley (Fr. - Wauwatosa) each had eight digs and Rowley distributed 28 assists.
"It was a tough loss for the guys, but it showed a lot of heart for them to come back the way they did in the third set," said head coach Will Brydon. "We are still trying to find some consistency, but we are headed in the right direction. The talent is there and with a little more trust, time and effort the guys should have the goal of getting to the finals of the WVC Division II state championship."
