UW-Oshkosh II Continues Dominance of WVC Division II (4-6-15)
The UW-Oshkosh II men's volleyball team continued its incredible dominance of the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference (Division II) by wrapping up its 13th straight regular season title and winning its sixth consecutive state championship on Friday and Saturday (April 3-4) in La Crosse.
UW-Oshkosh (29-9-2) finished the WVC Division II regular season undefeated by beating Maranatha Baptist University 25-21, 25-18, UW-Milwaukee II 25-17, 25-18, Marquette University II 26-24, 25-12, Carroll University 25-17, 25-17 and UW-Parkside 25-16, 25-22. The Titans went 42-3 in sets played during the season in WVC action.
Entering the WVC State Championship as the number one seed, the Titans defeated Maranatha Baptist University in the quarterfinals 25-19, 25-14 and then survived a close three-set match against UW-Oshkosh III 25-11, 22-25, 15-5. In the finals UW-Oshkosh again was pushed to a deciding third set by Marquette University II, but prevailed 25-20, 24-26, 15-8 to take home the championship.
In the semifinals against UW-Oshkosh III the Titans were led by Nate Leitermann (So. - Brookfield) with eight kills on ten attempts. Sam Moua (So. - Appleton) picked up six digs and Adam Landgraf (Jr. - Kenosha) dished out 24 assists and had two service aces. Zach Tazalla (So. - Whitefish Bay) contributed four kills and two service aces and Tanner Swan (So. - Brookfield) had six kills on seven attempts. Alex Harty (So. - Racine) pitched in four digs in the win.
In finals against the Golden Eagles, the Titans were led by Moua with 15 digs. Braeden Melton (Jr. - Beloit) had a team high seven blocks and added eight kills and Landgraf contributed 27 assists and three blocks. Swan led the team with 11 kills, including four straight in the third set, Sammy Pedersen (So. - Muskego) amassed five kills and four digs and Leitermann had seven kills.
After splitting the first two sets, the Titans found themselves in a deadlock at 8-8 before scoring seven straight points to take home the championship. It was the fifth time this season that the Titans have defeated the Golden Eagles.
Landgraf was named the WVC State Championship Division II most valuable player. Melton and Leitermann were also named to the all-tournament team.
"This was a good test for us heading into nationals," said head coach Will Brydon. "We continue to find ways to win even when we are not playing our best. We are a little banged up right now, so we will have to get healthy as we try to repeat as national champions. I am proud that the guys kept our winning streak in the conference going. To be this consistent for such a long time is very impressive."
