The UW-Oshkosh III team finished their season on a high note by placing fourth in the regular season standings and tying for third-place at the WVC Division II State Championship on Friday and Saturday (April 3-4) in La Crosse.
UW-Oshkosh III (21-18) finished up the WVC Division II regular season by suffering a close loss to Marquette University II 25-21, 25-23, losing to UW-Parkside 25-17, 25-22 and beating UW-Milwaukee II 25-15, 21-25, 15-7 to finish 10-6 in league play.
In the first round of the WVC Division II State Championship, the Titans got by UW-Whitewater II, 25-23, 18-25, 15-8 and then lost to UW-Oshkosh II 25-11, 21-25, 15-5 in the semifinals. Steve Cotton (So. - Muskego) was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts throughout the course of the tournament.
In the quarterfinals against UW-Whitewater II, the Titans were led by Cotton who had 11 kills and four digs. Andy Rowley (Fr. - Wauwatosa) dished out 25 assists and added four digs and Trent Farrell (Fr. - New Berlin) had seven kills. Joe Kuchler (So. - Muskego) led the back court with eight digs.
Cotton once again led the Titans offensively in the semifinals against UW-Oshkosh II with nine kills. Kuchler scooped up nine digs and Danny Mirda (Fr. - Brookfield ) picked up five saves. Rowley had 18 assists and Farrell put down seven kills.
“If you just look at the UW-Oshkosh III team's record one would think it was a disappointing year, but that is not the case,” said head coach Brian Schaefer. “They were an extremely young team and had to deal with a key injury when Stuart Burkart (Jr. - Wauwatosa) was lost for the season. They competed at some very high level tournaments and gained a lot of court time experience for next season.”
